OCKE MANNERFELT DESIGN
B28 'Bat Boat'
Built October 1994 in Sweden, Hull #5 at Batbygarrna Marine yard

"After 15+ years ownership (1997-2015) and a series of upgrades, our boating tastes and preferences are starting to change. Since this is such a unique boat. For sure, it needs to go to an owner that understands the compromises that accompany the benefits of owning a boat like this. It's fast, it's economical (3.3 mpg @ 55 mph), and it's reliable, but it requires attention at high speeds and around the dock."
C_Spray, previous owner

The Basics:

Hull built in Sweden in October 1994 at Batbygarrna (raceboat yard) fully-cored with Divinycel foam (including the bottom and interior liner), 40% Kevlar and vacuum-bagged.
"One of the best-built hulls I've ever seen." - Bobby Moore
  1. This is the ONLY lightweight pleasure hull (1800 lbs bare) in the US. All the other 28's are US or Canadian built, and most likely solid layup and not vacuum bagged.  Hull 500+hours
  2. Rigged by Bobby Moore in 1997;
  3. Re-rigged and re-powered with an Ilmor MV-10 725 Ilmor engine and Indy outdrive package by Penske Racing personnel (me and others) in 2010. The entire re-rigging process is fully documented with extensive photos.
  4. 'Signature' Graphics and Paint by GrafikEFX.
  5. Best performance to date is 103 mph at 5900 (engine good to 6400). More speed is there with some set-up work.
  6. Hering 5-blade prop, Livorsi VantageView gauges, Garmin 740 chartplotter, MarineAir air conditioning in cockpit and cabin, 3 group 31 batteries with 2000 watt inverter, Carbon seats,
  7. South Florida trailer with new disc brakes in 2010.
  8. Full towing cover, cockpit cover, and roof extension canvas included.
  9. 42 hours on the Ilmor package. Extra Mobil One 1w40 and oil filers included.
  10. Sony/Canton stereo system.
Complete Survey June 2011:
"THE VESSEL WAS FOUND TO BE IN OVERALL EXCELLENT CONDITION. THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR SHOW AS NEW. THIS IS A VERY RARE VESSEL AND THE ENGINE AND DRIVE ARE EXPENSIVE AND NEW. THIS VESSEL HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED AND IT SHOWS. THIS VESSEL IS CONSTRUCTED OF HIGH TECH MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY AND IS ONE OF THE CLEANEST 1995 BOATS I HAVE SEEN. WITH THESE FACTORS IN MIND I AM APPRAISING THIS MANNERFELT B-28 "TRY ME" AT $100,000.00"

Ilmor MV-10 725hp engine and Indy outdrive Project
1st customer installed engine/drive package
-1:30am  delivered
-8:45am  unloaded
-9:30am  mocked up engine in boat
-11:00am  engine out
-1:30pm  transom cut and drilled
-3:30pm  engine and drive installed in final mock up
5/7/10  transom painted
5/16/10  8:15pm fired up
Testing --  60-88mph acceleration is a blurr, 5400rpm/100mph 'hop'
--  1 and 2" drive spacers tried and lost speed

Propellers
-Hering Clever style, 16.5", 29"pitch, 14*rake, 4 blade
-Hering Clever style, 15.5", 31"pitch, 17*rake, 5 blade-- too much pitch to rev out, too small diameter at speed comes out of the water, 80's mph, no difference with 1" spacer
-Hering Clever style, 16.5", 29"pitch, 18*rake, 5 blade--  hope extra rake will lift bow (vs. 14*rake)
-Hering Cleaver style,  15", 27"pitch, 16*rake, 95mph@5700rpm
-Hering cut my 16.5" prop down to 15.75" and reduced the cup near the hub for less stern lift, 90+mph with 4 people onboard
-Hering rounded the ears off of the prop for more bow lift, diminished hopping issues, with a best of 103+, and easily cruises in the mid-80's. The mid-range acceleration is back, 103mph@5600
PROP SLIP- drive 1.39:1, 29"pitch 5 blade cleaver, 103@5600, theoretical=111mph, actual=103mph, prop slip = 7% !!

C_Spray- 'Heartfelt thanks go to the folks who really made this happen':

  1. R'Addiction, for his unwavering friendship, great help and (most importantly) moral support and motivation. There's no way this would have happened without you, John.
  2. Ilmor High Performance, for an awesome package and amazing customer support. When I called them at 8:00 PM on Sunday night, they answered. They also called me back at 7:00 AM on Monday morning to give me the rest of the answers to my questions. Never, ever doubt this company's motivation.
  3. GlassDave Sikorski, for stepping up to the bat on a tricky project. (And even working the weekend...)
  4. Old School, for loaning me some expensive props, no questions asked.
  5. Bobby Moore, for the incredible amount of knowledge and advice he is willing to share.
  6. Brownie, for being like Bobby, but even funnier.
  7. The Online Supporters who kept me going.
  8. MobilMercMan, for a quiet word in my ear that saved me a LOT of trouble.
  9. JRapp, for pitching in every time he came by and for being a huge help at (and documenting) the first test.
